Colleges look at a student's GPA to get an idea of how that student has performed academically across all courses and how prepared they are for college-level coursework.

Admission officers may also look at the rigor of courses taken—for example, they might give more weight to the GPA for a student who takes an AP or honors or IB class—and grade trends and patterns, such as a low GPA that improves over the course of high school.
